Volunteers catalog ancient Utah rock art
-Caleb Warnock

The tree spoke to her.

Late Saturday morning, Sue Baughman of Ely, Nev., was walking through the desert near Fillmore when she spotted a round white stone the size of a tennis ball beneath a huge, ancient juniper.

"I saw the tree and it called to me," Baughman said.

The stone, Baughman knew instantly, was out of place. She walked closer to the tree to investigate and ducking beneath the branches, found the remains of an ancient Fremont Indian homesite -- hundreds of pottery shards, a grain grinding stone, knapping tools, obsidian implements.

Baughman was one of 25 volunteers from around the country who converged on the Devil's Kitchen area starting on Friday to spend two days cataloging petroglyphs and American Indian ruins as part of an effort coordinated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to part of an early celebration of National Public Lands Day on Sept. 30.
