[Note to Admin: Please change the type of site to "Other". This is a Ball Court - a type of site you don't have a catagory for. Thanks!]

OK, what sort of site is a 'Ball Court'? I presume that's not meant literally!

Well, it's a ball court. You know Americans - we're literalists. The first entry I made on a Ball Court was at the Casa Grande site. This one is similar. This is thought to be the North American version of the mesoamerican stone ball courts farther south. This is a big oval ampitheater area. They are clearly visible both here and at Casa Grande in the Flash earth view.

I guessed it might look like a ball court but are people suggesting that ancient games of ball were played? Or...?

Yes, a game area - really. They think a ball game because that's what historic folks did down in Mexico on stone courts of a similar size. (You think I'm just trying to string you along on this? :) (Ha, let's see if they believe this!...))

I've not given it a heck of a lot of thought since I visited Casa Grande and the NPS called this thing a "ball court." So, I checked around the web to try to determine if I was going mad. No, I'm not. People have been calling these ball courts and assuming some sort of game was played there. Click on any of these and search "ball" on the page and you'll find it.

Given a lack of a big petrogylph with an image of one of these structures full of guys batting a ball around - this type of structure is assumed to have been a gathering place where something that required "boundaries" was performed.
Its not a central plaza, because you don't need a set boundary, nor are they all "central". No body built anything "on" these, they don't find lots of artifacts, like you might if it had been the cooking/working ground or a marketplace.

I've found one "nay-sayer" named Fisher who is fed up with people ascribing non-practical meaning to SW structures. He thinks they are big basins for cultivating algae to use for compost!

But we don't have a big petroglyph of people scraping up algae off these things either. ;)
