Casa Grande - The Great House
Casa Grande - The Great House submitted by AlexHunger : Casa Grande Coolidge, Arizona on Ruins Drive. As seen from South. Hohkam Culture. Inhabited ca 100 to 1300 CE. Discovered 1694 CE by Spanish Priest. Thought to be abandoned due to climate change. Made of "Caliche" dried mud. Very fragile, therefore protected by roof. Ancient Building in Arizona. Part of the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, Pinal County, Arizona. The Great House is a four story structure made of dried mud. The Great House may have been a palace or temple. Originally it had wooden floors on the upper stories. The holes for the joists are still visible. There are some claims made for the astronomical alignment of certain windows and structures in the building, but I believe this is still speculative.

There are some claims made for the astronomical alignment of certain windows and structures in the building, but I believe this is still speculative. Built by Hohokam people. I've seen occupancy dates for this building and the settlement from 900 - 1400 AD. This was an agricultural community. The site may have been abandoned because of climate changes. The site is managed by the National Park Service.

Note: Prehistoric Site Under Attack by Birds, see comment.

Casa Grande - The Great House
Casa Grande - The Great House submitted by Flickr : The significance of Casa Grande ruins lies in its prehistoric past when the builders and inhabitants achieved a sophisticated culture. Casa Grande fell within the heartland of an extensive prehistoric agricultural society. The Hohokam (a Pima Indian term meaning "those who have gone"), with their lengthy canal irrigation system, were masters of the desert. The Hohokam culture did not suddenly...

Arizona Archaeology Expo, March 5, 2016 by Andy B on Monday, 01 February 2016
(User Info | Send a Message)
March 5, 2016
Address: Casa Grande Ruins National Monument
1100 W. Ruins Drive, Coolidge, Arizona

The Arizona Archaeology Expo is the main event of the annual Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month in March. Held in a different community each year, the Expo features archaeology-related hands-on activities, craft demonstrations, and other fun and educational events.

The National Park Service is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2016 and is the host for this year’s Expo, for which the theme is “Heritage Matters: The Past Begins Today.”

The Expo features displays by archaeological and historical organizations, museums, Native American tribes, state and federal agencies, and others, allowing visitors to participate as archaeologists might in their research today, or make crafts and tools that teach how prehistoric Native Americans and other early inhabitants survived in the Southwest. Cultural and historical demonstrations, talks by archaeologists, and interactive activities will help make the past come alive, and special archaeology tours in Casa Grande Ruins National Monument will be offered. Free-prize raffles will occur throughout the day.

Call it the Raptor Roust from the Roost by Andy B on Thursday, 07 September 2006
(User Info | Send a Message)
National Park officials are testing the ability of Marie, a raptor trained in bird abatement, to scramble and scare off most of the pigeons that have taken residence in and are befouling the prehistoric Casa Grande Ruins.

The four-story, hand-built structure that's the center of a Hohokam Indian village was the nation's first archaeological preserve and one of its first national monuments.

Pigeons have been roosting in its caliche, or concrete-like clay walls, for the past few years, damaging them with their pecking and their constant droppings. Other birds such as starlings and finches, while not roosting in the ruins, visit it, pecking away at the walls and leaving their calling cards as well.

Marie, a Harris' hawk rehabilitated by Liberty Wildlife, a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation foundation based in Scottsdale, has been brought in for two or three flights a week for the past few weeks, with fairly good results.

Prehistoric Site Under Attack by Birds by Andy B on Thursday, 07 September 2006
(User Info | Send a Message)
The four-story Casa Grande Ruins, the hand-built centerpiece of a prehistoric American Indian village, have withstood Arizona's desert sun and its rains for perhaps seven centuries, reports Arthur Rotstein of Associated Press.

But now those walls of concrete-like clay face an unlikely threat from the air and ground: birds and squirrels.

Cooing pigeons roost in round holes that once held a stout wooden ceiling and floor beams. The birds peck at the hardened clay and foul the ruins with droppings.

Burrows dug by the native ground squirrels hold water that undermines some of the low-lying perimeter walls in the compound surrounding the centerpiece Casa Grande, or Great House.

Officials at the ruins 60 miles south of Phoenix are pondering ways to cope with the threats and minimize further degradation of the nation's first archaeological preserve.

``It's serious if we don't deal with it right now,'' said Paige Baker, the monument's superintendent. If not addressed, Baker added, ``Then we'll see this building start to deteriorate.''
