V/V submitted by TimPrevett : V/V Petroglyph Site, Arizona, 15/08/09 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Rock Art in The Southwest. V/V takes its name from the V/V cattle company in the 1930s, its brand mark survives on a lone chimney stack near the visitor center. Situated in the Wet Beaver Creek Wilderness in the Coconino National Forest, V/V is home to much older Native American Indian petroglyphs. The better known Montezuma's Castle is a relatively short drive away.

Signing in at the visitor center is necessary,(a good little gift shop too which supports the site) and it's about 10-15 minute 3/4 mile walk to the petroglyph site. The rocks are dense with petroglyphs, some of which feature in an archaeo-astronomical event. I saw a token of this event in the afternoon of my visit on 15th August 2009.

Two deliberately placed and shaped stones above the panels cast shadow daggers across different glyphs, pointing to different marks at key times of the year. A lot more information on this (and more generally) is at the website http://www.sinaguasunwatchers.com/vbarv.htm

Although I didn't witness a key event, to see these shadows appear and work their way across the petroglyphs (which were thrill enough in themselves), was a very memorable time. A random collection of visitors and a member or two of staff over the long period we were here seemed to convene a strong, warm, congenial spirit talking about what we were experiencing.

Grid reference from GPS taken in the car park. Once visitors have signed in at the centre / shop, the petroglyphs are a 10 - 15 minute walk away.

Not far from Montezuma's Castle.

Note: Rock art / shadow interaction can be seen in the series of photos

V/V submitted by mfrincu : Solstice marker at V-bar-V. Image taken around the summer solstice in 2014. There is also a winter and equinox marker. At those times the shadow made by the two stone slabs visible in the image touch several spirals in the petroglyph panel. The event takes places around noon. A ranger is there to give information on how exactly this happens and what spirals are involved. (Vote or comment on this photo)

V/V submitted by Sardior : This is an image often called The Princess Leia (of Star Wars fame) symbol because of the headdress. It is interesting to note that the Hopi women often wear a headdress very similar in their spiritual ceremonies. (Vote or comment on this photo)

V/V submitted by Sardior : This appears to be the male counterpart of the "Princess Leia" symbol. It is smaller and across a crack in the rocks from the Princess symbol. As is the case with many other rock art sites, the cracks are often incorporated as a part of the symbolism.

Sardior writes:
This is an excellent site to view petroglyphs of the Southwestern US ancient prehistoric people. There are several generations of petroglyphs spanning many thousands of years. The oldest I think date 10,000 years ago or more. The ranch has been keeping them in great shape protecting them and the photo ops are excellent. Certain dates the sun makes perfect alignments with certain symbols with the shadows in the rocks. Would be a great place for studies of ancient shamanism and the correlation with the astronomical alignments.
