Tonto National Monument
Tonto National Monument submitted by Flickr : Shallow caves overlooking the Tonto Basin in southeastern Arizona shelter masonry dwellings nearly 700 years old. This was home to the prehistoric Salado people, named in the early 20th century after the life-giving Rio Salado, or Salt River. For three centuries, they made their living from what nature provided in mountainous desert terrain. This rugged land is full of life. The basin's topo... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Village in Gila County, Arizona. The two groups of well preserved cliff dwellings were built and re-built from the 1200's through the 1400's. There attributed to the Salado Culture, a farming, hunting and gathering culture known for its distinctive polychrome ceramics.

The Lower Cliff Dwelling can be seen from the museum. A pathway less than a mile long takes you up the slope where you can view several rooms of the dwelling. Construction began around 1250 AD and the dwelling was occupied for about 100 years. The construction is of stone mortored with mud, forming 10 - 12 enclosed ground floor rooms. Wood beams allowed for several two story rooms.
The Upper Cliff Dwelling is larger, with about 40 rooms. It can only be seen on a guided tour from the museum / visitor's center, during cooler months. The walk to the ruin is around 3 miles round trip with a substantial elevation change. This dwelling was built later than the Lower Cliff Dwelling (1300 AD), but was occupied up until the Salado CUlture disasppeared from the Tonto Basin (~1400-1450 AD.) In historic times the Wi:pukba, or Northeastern Yavapai, lived in this area, although they had a very different life style from the ancient people of the Salado Culture. Both the Cliff Dwellings and multiple smaller sites in the sorrounding area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Note: The location given is not for the cliff dwellings themselves. The location given is for the visitor center and museum.
