Rock Art in Navajo County, Arizona - Hopi Nation.
The rock art of Taawaki decorates the walls of a horseshoe shaped, 200 foot high cliff located in the Dinnebito Wash within the Hopi Indian Reservation. The petroglyphs vary in size and style. The oldest appear to date from the Basketmaker II culture (200 BC - 400 AD). The newest are in the style of the Pueblo III culture (1150 - 1300 AD) although several of the petroglyphs are interpreted by Hopi guides as symbolic of the Spanish contact period (1600s AD).

The site is sacred to the Hopi people. It's location is unmarked on the unpaved roads leading to it, and the site may only be seen by visitors accompanied by a Hopi guide. However, the Taawaki rock art has been recently made available to the public via a CyArk website showing photographs, a "virtual tour," and the results of 3D scans (Archive link). The documentation was funded by the World Monument Fund, and recorded with the assistance of Wes Bernardini (University of Redlands - Archive link) and the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office.
Several guides registered by the Hopi Nation include this site as part of their regular tours and will interpret the figures in light of their own experience within Hopi culture and what can be revealed to visitors. As different Hopi clans have different ceremonies and teachings, different guides may have different interpretations they can share. The site also abounds with a wide variety of pottery shards, which reflect the long use of the site and trade within the southwest.
The location given is general for the area and does not mark the site directly.

An amazing site. Visited with a Hopi guide in 2012. Of all the Native American rock art sites we have visited, none tops this one. Literally, hundreds of examples. Our Hopi Guide said ok to take photos but not to publish them, so I am honoring that restriction. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Arizona.
