Ancient Village in Fremont County, Wyoming.Fifty or more housing sites built on a mountainside gradient of 30 to 20% at an altitude 11000 feet. The homes were wickiups (hides stretched over slender poles planted in the earth on both ends, with a partial stone foundation) and are placed among hearths, tool making areas and grinding stones. Although occupation of the sites varied periodically over several centuries, it dates back to 1100 AD.
Although other high altitude settlements have been found in the American West in the last few decades, High Rise Village is one of the highest, largest, and sits on one of the steepest grades (similar to many modern ski runs). The village is located within a designated wilderness area of the Shoshone National Forest, in the Wind River Mountains. Currently excavations and remote sensing activities are being conducted by Utah State University researchers.
Note: The location given is approximate. And the only access is on foot or by horseback. The Field School notice for the site tells prospective students to be prepared to hike 10 to 12 miles to the site.
