Ancient Village or Settlement in Cibola COunty, New Mexico.
Founded around 1200 AD, Hawikku was the largest Zuni pueblo at the time of the Coranado expedition in 1540. Coranado's forces found the Zuni outside the village and then took control of the site, using it as a headquarters for several months. Although it was not one of the fabled Seven Cities of Gold, Coranado called it "Capital of the Zuñis" and described a crowded village of plastered stone buildings, three to five stories high. He also described kivas and the surrounding fields.
The Spanish introduced Catholicism and the mission forced labor system. The mission church was burnt by the Zunis during a 1632 revolt. Following the 1680 Great Pueblo Revolt, Hawikku was abandoned.
The site lies on a hilltop south west of Halona Idiwan’a, Zuni Pueblo, the modern governmental center of the Zuni Nation. It is only accessible as part of a guided tour provided by the Zuni tourism center. The site was partially excavated in the 1920's by the Heye Foundation, and the artifacts placed in the George Gustav Heye Center, now a branch of the national museum of the American Indian. Unfortunately, the site was not backfilled after excavation or stablized in any way. As a result the excavated portions rapidly deteriorated and collapsed. Many Hawikku artifacts are now back of the Zuni Pueblo and are part of the A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center's exhibit on the Hawikku Pueblo.
What is visible today are the foundations of the sandstone masonry room blocks and collapsed walls along a long ridge. The remains of the adobe mission church are also visible.
The Hawikku Ruins are a National Historic Landmark and part of a larger Zuni-Cibola area listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
