Hovenweep - Hovenweep Castle
Hovenweep - Hovenweep Castle submitted by jeffrep : Hovenweep Castle. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Settlement in San Juan County, Utah.
An area of mostly mesa top structures created by the Ancestral Puebloan culture. The area was actively occupied from 500 AD through 1300 AD. However, most of the structures at Hovenweep were built from A.D. 1230 to 1275 (contemporary with the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings.)

Hovenweep is best known for stone towers. Most of these were built without ground level exterior entrances, and many are perched on rock outcroppings that are isolated and difficult to reach. Although many of these towers are associated with nearby kivas, the general aspect of defensive buildings draws a connection to the densive nature of many of the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, which were also built in it's last century of high population occupation.

The Hovenweep area also has the more subtile creations of farming terraces and water control structures like check dams.

Hovenweep is a National Monument, protected and managed by the National Park Service. The location given is for the Visitor's Center. This is located near the Square Tower Group, a concentration of dwellings which can be seen on a 2 mile long trail, a portion of which is paved and wheel chair accessible. Several other associated sites are within 10 to 12 miles of the visitor center.

The ambience rating for Hovenweep should be a 5: Superb!
It is a wonderful site, well worth the miles of back roads to get there.
