Ancient Village or Settlement in San Juan County, New Mexico
Like Pueblo Bonita and Una Vita, Peñasco Blanco was constructed over a long period of time. Tree ring data and other finds indicate that the Great House was occupied or re-peatedly occupied with periodic renovations and additions, starting around 900AD with final construction by 1125AD.
About 300 rooms have been identified, most in a arc five rooms deep. The rooms on the outside of the arc having second and third floor rooms above them. There were 17 kivas, four of them "Great Kivas" with several having been built outside the boundary of the Great House.
Most of the ruin is unexcavated, although some portions were excavated in the 1920's and 1930's. Penasco Blanco is the last site on the Hiking Trail named for it, and is a bit more than 3.5 miles from the parking area trail head). The site is on the south side of the canyon on West Mesa, so the end of the trail is a climb out of the canyon and onto the mesa. Between the trail head and Peñasco Blanco there are other Great House sites and petroglyphs and pictographs.
