The Castle Gardens Petroglyph Site is located in central Wyoming approximately 43 miles east of Riverton. Given the sandstone formations and dry wash areas, the area was given the name "Castle Gardens" as the formations reminded the first Europeans of castles and fortifications. This site has lured visitors for thousands of years, with many of them leaving marks or graffiti in the soft sandstone. The Castle Gardens area holds a numerous examples of Native American rock art, or petroglyphs.

From the BLM sign on site: "Oral traditions and cultural practices of various Plains Indian groups attest to their close ties with rock art sites, including Castle Gardens. Northern Arapaho Indians, for example, refer to Castle Gardens as "Houu Neci," or "Holy Water." The Castle Gardens rock art style is best known for its distinctive style of shields. Rock art at the site has been dated by archeologists as being created somewhere between 1300 and 1550 CE."

DIRECTIONS:

From Casper, Castle Gardens can be accessed by taking U.S. Hwy. 20/26 78 miles west to Castle Garden Rd just before Moneta. Take a left at the Castle Gardens sign and drive approximately 15 miles south on a well maintained dirt road. You will reach another BLM sign that directs you east for another 5 miles to Castle Gardens.

From Riverton, take Wyoming State Hwy. 136 east for approx. 38 miles, then turn north (left) on to Castle Gardens Rd (gravel and dirt) and head north for 6 miles. You will reach another BLM sign that directs you east 5 miles to Castle Gardens. Drivers should note that the road(s) can be somewhat rough, especially the county road section of the Casper route, so attention to road condition is advised. Regular passenger vehicles should have no problems accessing the site except during winter.
