Petroglyphs in Bernalillo County, New Mexico.
Petroglyphs. Natural Rock Outcropping.
The remnants of two ancient volcanoes can be seen on the western skyline in Albuquerque, New Mexico. On the lava boulders of one are a collection of over 10,000 petroglyphs.

Most of them are of abstract animals and human figures. The majority of the petroglyphs are of the "Rio Grande" style, associated with an intensive local pueblo population boom (1300 - 1600 AD.) Some figures are estimated to be as much as 3000 years old.
Day use hiking trails access much of the site, which is operated by the National Park Service. There are actually multiple units of the site.

The location given is for the Visitor's Center, and although this is the best place to start your visit, please be aware that the center was located for its access to major roads. None of the rock art trails are immediately adjacent to the center. The multiple trails where the rock art may be seen range across over 10 square miles.

Nearby is the Boca Negra Wash, site of Folsom artifact finds dating back to 8000 BC.

New Mexico Petroglyph Site gang vandalized. by bat400 on Wednesday, 25 April 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
Petroglyph National Monument is the latest target of an ongoing battle between Albuquerque gangs bent on proving dominance, this time by vandalizing the hallowed and historic park with graffiti.

At least eight large basalt boulders at the southern edge of the escarpment were marred with gang initials, or tags, written in silver metallic spray paint. No petroglyphs - ancient symbols carved in the rocks as far back as 3,000 years ago - were damaged by the spray paint, and no other lasting injury to the rocks was noted, Monument Superintendent Joseph Sanchez said.

"Our neighbors of the park are very vigilant and very caring," Fuller said. "They notify us as quickly as possible."

By Tuesday, tags had been removed from all but three boulders at the top of the ridge. Sanchez said his staff was hoping to complete the cleanup by late today or Thursday.

"We're sending a message that we're out there watching, and that such vandalism won't be tolerated and will be dealt with immediately," Sanchez said.

For more, see the Albuquerque Tribune for information on the cost of the cleanup and federal penalities associated with graffiti. Albuquerque gang violence has claimed 11 lives in the last four years; official and community groups have boosted efforts to remove "tags" left by gangs to claim their territory, while police work against gang violence.

Part of archaeological site destroyed in Albuquerque by bat400 on Saturday, 03 March 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
submitted by coldrum -

"ALBUQUERQUE Crews working on a waterline for a new high school on Albuquerque's west side have destroyed part of an archaeological site.

"A University of New Mexico archaeologist, Bruce Huckell, says the site was the first proof the presence of the Folsom culture in the Albuquerque basin.

"Huckell says the district had carefully located the school around the site. But he says the district didn't think about the location of the utilities for the school."

For more, see Channel 10, Amarillo.
