Museum in Bernalillo County, New Mexico.
Established in 1932, the museum houses exhibts relating to human cultures from around the world, but "its primary emphasis on the [North American] Southwest, the Maxwell is world-renowned for its holdings from this region."

Permanent exhibits are "Ancestors" and "People of the Southwest."
"Ancestors" traces 4 million years of human evolution using models of distant ancestors like "Lucy," Neanderthal and Homo habilis, and a reconstructed cave setting, complete with Ice Age drawings and sculptures.
"People of the Southwest" highlights 11000 years of culture including the human response to daily environment and subsistence needs, as reflected by prehistoric artefacts and major excavation findings. The museum is also curates the results of 60 years of research in Chaco Canyon. This exhibit includes a reconstruction of a room at Chaco Canyon, an outstanding collection of prehistoric pottery, hands-on activities for children.
