Bandelier National Monument - Frijoles Canyon Cliff Dwellings

Ancient Settlement in Sandoval and Los Alamos Counties, New Mexico.
Bandelier preserves the ruins of the homes of Ancestral Puebloan peoples, with the majority of structures dating to 1150AD to 1600AD (Pueblo Era III and IV) However, occupation of the area dates to 10,000 before present.

The most accessible ruins are in Frijoles Canyon and consist of rock shelters made by expanding natural holes in a large cliff of volcanic tuff, pueblos below the cliff, and the large, circular pueblo, Tyuonyi.

Petroglyphs and pictograms decorate the walls of the canyon near the dwellings. The Little Frijoles Creek provides water throughout most years. The majority of Bandelier is designated as wilderness area and is only accessible by hiking. Backcountry trails allow access to smaller pueblo ruins, and rock art.

The national monument is named for the ethnographer and archaeologist Adolph Bandelier who first visited the area in 1880. The location given for this site listing is for the visitor's center where trail guides, water, and limited food service is available. There is also a camp ground. During the peak visitors' season (variable, May through October, see the park website) day visitors to the park must take shuttle buses from the nearby town of White Rock.
