Rock Art in Nayarit.
A complex panel of petroglyphs attributed to the Azltan culture, and therefore dated to between 850 and 1350 AD. The panel is about 4 meters long and 2 meters wide, and is located in the mountian region above the Pacific coastal heart of the Azlatan culture.
Archaeologist Manuel Garduño Ambriz describes figures as symbolic of fertility (rain clouds, sectioned snail shells, and feminine vulvae) and others as representing faces and skulls which point to the east, "towards the sunrise.”
Mauricio Garduño believes the panel may have been placed at this location to take advantage of an astronomical alignments or features associated with the Azlatan ritual calendar.
The site is being documented.
