1,600 year-old shaft tomb in the State of Zacatecas. The remains of 28 individuals, which may have been placed within during two separate interrments. This previously unopened tomb may be of particular importance because artifacts like these have seldom been recorded in situ, they are usually the results of poor investigations from the past, or modern looting.
The artifact photo illustrating this listing is an example, and not a find from this site excavation.
Shaft tombs are a structural tradition in Western Mexico, although Zacatecas lies outside the main "arc" of sites. However, they are associated with several cultures (e.g. Colima,) all appearing to lie outside the sphere of mesoamerican influence within what is now Mexico.
The location given is for the farming village of La Florida, mentioned in a news story about the excavation, but it does not reflect the actual location of the tomb.
Note: Mexican archaeologists excavate 1,600 year-old shaft tomb in the State of Zacatecas. See comment.
