This extensive bone bed of bison was discovered in the 1950's. Local ranchers disputed an original determination of a flock of sheep killed in a winter storm. Eventually the site has been dated to 10000 years ago and excavations found stone tools and worked stone among the bones, indicative of the Alberta PaleoIndian Culture. Later examination refuted the indications of a Bison kill site and the sometimes aggressive controversy of battling excavations has continued ever since.

The site is operated under license to the US Forest Service but a variety of researchers continue to excavate and provide further evidence for or against Hudson-Meng being a kill site. But the website is unabashedly pro Bison Kill Site. There is no cliff face associated with the bonebed, only a depression in which early hunters may have stampeded and ambushed their prey.

A portion of the excavation is under roof and is open to the public during the summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The site is located in Nebraska's Oglala National Grassland administered by the Nebraska National Forest, on the shoulder of the picturesque Pine Ridge, overlooking the Black Hills of South Dakota. As an added bonus, it's only a few miles (or a short hike) to the moonscape of Toadstool Geologic Park.

Despite its accessibility by car, Hunson-Meng is located in one of least populated portions of the continental United States. Sioux County Nebraska has a population density of only 0.7 persons/sq. mile. Even the casual tourist is advised to keep aware of gasoline levels and the outdoor enthusiast is advised that western Nebraska weather can turn from shadeless, broiling +120 deg F days to chilly nights and dangerous wind conditions.

I worked on the Hudson-Meng site from 1972 through 1974. It was clear that this is an 8,000 year old bison kill site, due to chipped stone spear heads found in-situ in the bone bed and in place in a bison vertebra.

Unlike when I worked there, the site is now in an air-conditioned building where work on the bone bed continues. One can easily drive to the site from Crawford, Nebraska, and either return or continue on north to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
