Cool East ogham stone
Cool East ogham stone submitted by GaelicLaird : Photo taken August 2020 (Vote or comment on this photo)
This ogham stone is located on a natural terrace on the lower SW slopes of Geokaun hill, Valencia Island, from which commanding views may be had to S and W.

Of irregular elevation, this large stone rises to a maximum height of 2.4m, measures 0.77m x 0.45m at base and is aligned NNW-SSE. It inclines somewhat to NE and carries the inscription along its SE angle.

Officially recorded as monument KE078-007

A second ogham stone stands 400m to NE in Kildreenagh ecclesiastical site (KE078-009004-).

Macalister's revised reading (1945, 226-7) of this is:
. . . ]ERRLONNA MAQI R[U]T[E]N[I]

The very weathered and uneven surface of the stone detracts from the general clarity of the inscription. The first stroke of the L is unclear, as is the final stroke of the second N. The next character appears to be M rather than A. Only two notches of the first I are discernible, and the first stroke of the third R is incomplete. The first stroke of the T and the final E and I are doubtful.

The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 912.

Hi Martin, yes you're correct. Thanks for highlighting this. Unfortunately I copied the data from my notes incorrectly :(

The stone is located on the south side of the road, not the northern side.

The ITM Easting is 437419, Northing 575562 which matches the coordinates you've given.

      Hi Andy

Please refer to comments already posted between myself and Martin L for both this site and nearby Cool East wedge tomb.

Unfortunately I made an error when transferring co-ordinate data from my initial notes to entering the data on the website for these two sites. This was spotted by Martin L, I've checked the info again and I concur with his suggested corrections.

Apologies for the initial misleading info but would suggest a repositioning of the site icon on the map as per Martin L's suggested co-ordinates for both sites.

Lesson learnt; measure twice, cut once.

      Sorry for the hassle :(

Marvellous site. Thanks for submitting a page and photo. I failed to spot it on google street view and then noticed that they show it actually 150m to the East of the location currently assigned. Coordinates copied from google are „51.908403, -10.363026“ as far as i can see. Please verify.
