Rock Art in Co. Kerry. A possible Bronze Age spiral carved into a rock near the Dingle Peninsula's Pilgrim's Way (Cosán na Naomh). Rock art in the townland of Corr Áille officially recorded as monument number KE043-263---- In mountain heath, upon a conspicuous rock outcrop (246m OD), adjacent level area of ground that forms a saddle between Rinn Chonaill, to SE and a lower summit, to W; steep descent to NE. Extensive vista to Ballyferriter and Smerwick Harbour WSW->WNW, over Ballydavid Head at NNW and across Brandon Mountain range NE->E and Ballysitteragh Mountain to SE.

The Rock Art is located upon an upright portion of rock which forms part of a side elevation of this outcrop; named upon OS historic mapping as Carrigameen; drystone boundary wall abuts to S. A slightly rough and unfractured, triangular-shaped portion of sandstone (dims. 0.80m WSW-ENE; 0.45m NNE-SSE) having a SSE-facing decorated surface bearing a single spiral motif (dims. 0.19m WSW-ENE; H 0.18m) which is obscured by white lichens.
This decorative element has a clockwise groove (Wth 1-3.5cm; D 6-8mm) that is narrow (Wth 1cm) in the centre, broadens (Wth 3.5cm) as it winds out and narrows again as it tails off.

Located upon a saint’s road known as Cosán na Naomh, which is a medieval pilgrim route from Ventry to Brandon Mountain; The portion in this vicinity extends from Kilmalkeadar Early Christian and Medieval ecclesiastical complex (KE042-026----) at SW, to Corr Aille, at NE.
Initially identified as rock art by Colm Bambury in 2011. Compiled by: Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly.

It's a not too difficult walk to find this site. Follow the signposted pilgrims path north east from Kilmalkedar church. Keep heading to the high ground whilst sticking to the path. Once you're about as high as you can go keep a lookout for a rock outcrop a few metres to the left of the path (I've uploaded a photo of the rock outcrop). The art panel is facing the path to your left. Views of the surrounding area would be great on a clear evening. When I visited, the hillside was covered in a moody mist fresh in from the sea and vision was down to about 30 metres. As always, be careful in the mountains.

There is an article by archaeologist Aoibheann Lambe called 'Mystery of Ireland's Rock Art' in this week's 'Ireland's Own' (Summer Special 2020) magazine. "Aoibheann Lambe is an archaeologist based in Caherdaniel in Co. Kerry and current chair of Heritage Iveragh/Oidhreacht Uibh Rathaigh,"says Ireland's Own. Rock spiral found in Dingle could date back to Bronze Age by davidmorgan on Monday, 28 November 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
A rock bearing what is believed to be a rare piece of art dating back to the Bronze Age has been discovered on an outcrop alongside a medieval pilgrim route in west Kerry. The discovery two weeks ago of “a perfect spiral” on a rock off the main Cosán na Naomh on the Dingle peninsula, is being assessed by county archaeologist Michael Connolly.

Measuring 19.5cm, it was found by local man Colm Bambury between Cill Mhicéadair and Baile an Lochaigh near the foot of Mount Brandon. The area is dotted with standing stones, Ogham and beehive huts and other monuments from early Christianity.

The drawing is believed to be thousands of years old and follow-up investigations by Mr Connolly found indications of Bronze Age enclosures in the immediate vicinity.
