Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Co. Mayo
The monastic site of Tobar Dherbhile at Fallmore ( Faulmore) An Fal Mor dates from the 6th century CE when St Dherbhile (Derivla) founded a convent here at the southern end of the Mullet Peninsula. There are two early Christian pillar-stones, a ruined Medieval church, and a curious stone enclosure called St Derivla's Bed.
Winthin the enclosure of the ruined granite church stands a tallish Celtic pillar-stone with a faint incised cross carved upon it, and leaning against the outer wall a shorter pillar-stone also bears an incised cross - this was said to mark the grave of the saint. Another strange oddity here is a rectangular stone structure claimed to be St Derivla's Bed, or was it her grave ? About 300 yards north of the church are the remains of the saints holy well.
According to legend, St Derivla plucked out her own eyes in order to make herself less attractive to men - in her own eyes she saw herself as being very beautiful. After that she was able to live out her life as a nun in peace and seclusion on the windswept cliffs overlooking the sea.
