Hillfort in Wiltshire

Hillfort with single encircling bank and ditch on the top of a north-facing chalk escarpment.

Of added interest are the military badges carved into the side of the hill, just to the north of the hillfort, during WWI.

Chiselbury
Chiselbury submitted by JimChampion : Two-photo composite image of the southwestern side of Chiselbury. The ditch and tree-covered bank are to the right. The area around the fort is covered with daisies and grazed by cattle. The field on the left is full of blooming oil-seed rape. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Chiselbury
Chiselbury submitted by JimChampion : Looking down into the section of ditch between the two causeways on the eastern side of Chiselbury hillfort. The ancient monument's scheduling only mentions one causeway and original entrance, so perhaps one of them is a later addition? There is a small 'bailey' (D-shaped earthwork) outside the original entrance but it has been significantly reduced by ploughing. The field containing the hillfort ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Chiselbury
Chiselbury submitted by JimChampion : Looking north along the rampart on the southeastern side of Chiselbury hillfort. The iron age camp is surrouned by a single bank and ditch, this portion is the only part to be densely wooded. Around the rest of the ring there are a few thorn trees. The site is grazed by cattle. Chiselbury
Chiselbury submitted by JimChampion : There are two gaps in Chiselbury's rampart, close together on the southeastern side of the hillfort. Apparently there are remains of a D-shaped enclosure outside of this, probably part of the entrance fortifications, although it is much reduced by ploughing. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Chiselbury
Chiselbury submitted by JimChampion : Two-photo composite image of Chiselbury's interior, looking from the southwestern part of the rampart towards the south. The interior has been under cultivation in the past and so there are no obvious traces of Iron Age occupation. Currently it is grazed by cattle and at this time of year there are thousands of cowslips growing on the calcerous soil.

From The Ancient History of Wiltshire by Sir Richard Colt Hoare (published 1812) Chapter No. 11 - Station 8: Fovant.

CHISELBURY CAMP forms an irregular circle, has a single vallum and ditch, with an outwork and entrance towards the south-east. The area within the ramparts contains ten acres and a half, the circumference of the work is three furlongs 154 yards, and the height of the vallum is twenty-seven feet: a great part of the camp is covered with heath and furze. Two ancient banks and ditches issue from the work, and descend into the vallies on the north and south sides of the Ridge. From the form and regularity of the work, I am inclined to think this camp to have been one of a modern date, perhaps of the same area as those of CHLORUS, and CLEARBURY, for we dug in several parts of the area, but discovered no bones or pottery, which are the never-failing indicia of ancient residence and population.

Engraving of the camp's plan, from Wiltshire County Council's website.
