Rock Art in West Yorkshire
F.A. Leyland (c.1867) makes a case for this as a standing stone in his commentary on the History of Halifax, but it is natural piece of rock, mushroom-shaped, about eight feet tall. Getting on top of it is slightly tricky, but once there you'll see the only known example of a complete cup-and-ring carving in this part of the county. Next time I'm up there I'll get a picture of the carving (unless one of you lot beats me to it!).
There's a grand probability this impressive rock had some geomantic relationship with the tall Rudstoop Standing Stones nearby (of which only one remains).
A note of caution to anyone visiting this site: make sure you knock on the door of Lower Lumb Farm & ask if it's OK to look at this stone before wandering up the track to see it for yourself. Don't say you've not been warned!
