St Andrew, Kildwick, West Yorkshire
St Andrew, Kildwick, West Yorkshire submitted by Sunny100 : Collection of Anglian/Danish cross fragments of the 10th C AD in St Andrew's Church, Kildwick, West Yorkshire. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross in Yorkshire (West)

Collection of Anglian/Danish cross fragments in St Andrew's church, at the south side, near the choir vestry. They are thought to date from the 10th C AD and may be part of a Saxon preaching cross that stood on the site of the first church about 950 AD.

The carved decoration consists of single and double interlacing scrolls. One fragment shows a man, perhaps Christ, holding an L shaped object, perhaps a representation of Christ in Resurrection, while another fragment faintly shows a man with his arm upheld and a beast on each side, possibly representing Christ as the Good Shepherd, according to Alec Wood in his 'History and Description of the Parish Church of St Andrew, Kildwick-in-Craven' (Church Guide), 1996.

For more information about the church see 'About St Andrew's Church, Kildwick', Historic England List ID 1132175 and Pastscape Monument No. 48100; the latter entry tells us that fragments of 10th century Anglo-Saxon crosses are stored in the church. The St. Andrew's own website says: "The Church was founded in AD 950 and is a magnificent building dating from the 14th century. A church at Kildwick existed at the time of the Domesday Survey of 1086, but stone crosses of Scandinavian design were found built into in the Chancel wall indicating a much earlier building on the site. St Andrews Church Kildwick has evolved into its present form from the 13th Century."

The Journal of Antiquities also includes a page for this church - see their entry for St Andrew’s Church, Kildwick, West Yorkshire, which includes photographs of the fragments and a description, plus details of other interesting artefacts in the church, together with their reference source (Alec Wood, History and Description of the Parish Church of St Andrew Kildwick-in-Craven).
