Archaeologists find pre-historic migrants by bat400 on Tuesday, 18 January 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
EXPERT analysis has shed new light on the history of Cirencester.

Scientists have examined the teeth of human remains found during an archeological dig. They believe the people were not local, but had travelled here from the far south-west – probably Devon or Cornwall.

Also, they lived here before the Romans arrived in the early first century BC.

"This is of great regional significance, and it will generate national interest", said Edward Biddulph, senior project manager with Oxford Archaeology which conducted the dig.

Mr Biddulph gave details of his find in a talk to Cirencester Archaeological and Historical Society at the Ashcroft Centre, Cirencester.

"The excavation gave archaeologists a remarkable window into Cirencester’s prehistoric past, and provided a wealth of information about Cirencester before Corinium", said Mr Biddulph.

The human remains were both women, and they were found during excavations two years ago at a housing development at Kingshill. At the time, it was described as Cirencester's "most significant" historical find.

One of the women was thought to be of high status as she was buried with a cowhide and ceramic beaker in a small burial mound surrounded by a ditch.

It is thought they were part of a settlement attracted by the rich farm land which gave excellent feeding for livestock.

Experts believe the settlement was abandoned when Cirencester, or Corinium, was established as a town. The inhabitants of the farmstead either moved into the new town, or were "re-housed".

A book presenting the results of the analysis and story of the site will be published by Oxford Archaeology in the New Year. The finds are still with Oxford Archaeology, but will eventually displayed at the Corinium Museum, possibly in the New Year.

Museum unveils rare collection of gold by Andy B on Monday, 11 February 2008
(User Info | Send a Message)
A rare treasure hoard unearthed in the Cotswolds will be unveiled to the public for the first time this week.

The hoard of gold, which was discovered by a metal detector enthusiast in Poulton three years ago, will be shown off to visitors to Cirencester's Corinium Museum from Monday.

The 3,000-year-old gold arrived at the museum last week after a successful fundraising campaign to buy the gold and keep it in the Cotswolds.

Public donations of over £3,000 rolled in during the first three months enabling the museum to secure £17,000 worth of grant money from the MLA/V&A Purchase Fund, The Headley Trust and The National Art Fund.

John Paddock, Cotswold District Council's Curator of Museums, said: "We are thrilled that public support for the appeal has enabled us to buy the only known collection of Bronze Age gold-work from the Cotswolds.

"Local donations were the key to securing the grant funding. We couldn't have done it without the support of residents and visitors to the museum.

"We would like to thank everyone who donated money and hope they will come to see the hoard in its new home."

Analysis of the hoard suggests that it inculdes fragments of jewellery, sheet gold-work and the tip of a bronze spearhead.

It also contains bronze tools which link the find to a goldsmith who worked in the Cotswolds more than 3,000 years ago.
