Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Gloucestershire. Up on the hillside above the village is the 18th century well house that encloses St. Kenelm's well. This is one of a series of such spring which arose when the saint's body was rested on the way to his shrine.

He was murdered by his sister and a white dove sent word to Rome regarding it and his body was disclosed. The well house is unfortunately locked especially disappointing after a long walk. A carving of the saint is seen over the doorway.

From 4clydesdale7: St Kenelm was a Saxon King and Martyr. The Well dates from AD819. The Well House was originally built c1549 and rebuilt/restored in 1887.

I am fascinated by a Standing Stone immediately adjacent to the Well - it stands about 4ft high, strange that Pastscape makes no mention of it. Formed from Holey Stone (as my photo shows) - is this a pagan Well 'adopted' by the early Christians ?

The well is recorded as Historic England List ID 1340263 and Pastscape Monument No. 327829. Historic England tells us that whilst the well head was restored in 1887, it possibly incorporates some elements from the 16th century building, and that a chapel stood here in the middle ages.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for St Kenelm’s Well, Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, which includes a photograph, background information on the site and the legend of St Kenelm, plus a list of reference sources for further information.
