Pentridge 2
Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : March 2005. Composite image of the Pentridge 2 long barrow(s) looking south-west from the bank of Bokerley Dyke. This is a looooong barrow, with its SE end disappearing off the edge of the photo. The site of the Dorset Cursus' north-eastern terminal is just to the right of this picture, although it was not noticeable in the young wheat. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Long Barrow in Dorset

This large neolithic barrow, around 150m long, 20m wide and 2m high, lies on a fairly flat part of Martin Down on the Dorset side of the Romano-British Bokerley Dyke. Its axis points SE-NW, with the wider flatter end to the SE and the taller narrower end pointing to (and just a few metres away from) the NE terminal of the Dorset Cursus (now ploughed out and seen only as crop marks). It is suggested that the barrow is contemporary with the cursus and deliberately aligned on its terminal, as are several other long barrows in the neighbourhood.

The present day form of the barrow comprises two distinct parts: the taller narrower part (tree-covered) to the north-east and the wider flatter part (grass-covered) to the south-west. These parts are 50m and 90m long, respectively. Although they have been considered to be two cojoined long barrows, probing and aerial photography has revealed them to have a common continuous ditch (now ploughed out). Another suggestion is that the western part is a classic long barrow, with the eastern part as a tail that was added later: the presence of the Dorset Cursus terminal would have prevented expansion in the other direction.

The barrow stands as an impressive neolithic monument that has survived the ravages of the plough, unlike the nearby Dorset Cursus earthworks. Note: There is a slightly overgrown round barrow at the south-east end of the bank barrow.

Access The Pentridge 2 barrow stands in the middle of an arable field which is criss-crossed by public rights of way. The field is bordered to the north-east by the Bokerley Dyke, and this much later earthwork provides an easy way of finding the barrow. On the east side of the dyke is Martin Down national nature reserve which has its own car parks at SU037201 (just off the busy A354) and at SU058192 (at the western end of Sillen Lane from central Martin village). You could try approaching along the bridleway from Pentridge village to the south, but there is little scope for parking in this tiny village.

Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : The north-westerly half of the barrow, viewed from the south. All of the tree-covered long barrow and some of the grassy bank barrow are visible. The woods in the far distance are all part of Vernditch Chase. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Pentridge 2
Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : The entire barrow, viewed from the north-east. The 50 metre long tree-covered long barrow is nearest, with the 90 metre long bank barrow beyond. The whole thing points at the terminal of the Dorset Cursus which once stood in the field in the foreground (now destroyed!). (Vote or comment on this photo)

Pentridge 2
Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : The barrow viewed end-on, from the south-east. The nearest end of the barrow is a bowl barrow which obscures the view of the long grassy bank barrow. The trees on the long barrow at the far end can be seen. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Pentridge 2
Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : View south from the bank of Bokerley Dyke. The tree-covered mound of the Pentridge 2 long barrow is in the centre of the photo, amongst the young crop, with the bank barrow part extending off to the left. On the slopes of Bokerley Down, towards the left of the photo, the Pentridge 1 barrow is casting a long shadow across the field. The tree-covered hilltop to the right of the photo is Penbury Knol... Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : The entire barrow, viewed from the south. The nearest end is a bowl barrow, then a long grassy bank barrow, with a tree-covered long barrow at the far end. The whole thing points towards the site of the Pentridge Cursus's north-eastern terminal.

Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : The entire Pentridge 2 double-barrow, viewed from the south-east. At the nearest end is a bowl barrow, then a long bank barrow, then a conventional long barrow which has been over-planted with trees. The whole structure points north-west towards the site of the Pentridge Cursus's north-eastern terminal.

Pentridge 2
Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : The tree-planted conventional long barrow at the north-west end of the Pentridge 2 double-barrow, viewed from the south-west. It is typical of the long barrows in this part of Cranborne Chase, gently sloping from one end to the other.

Pentridge 2
Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : View of the entire barrow from the north-west. The field in the foreground is the site of the earthworks associated with the north-eastern terminal of the Pentridge Cursus (the north-eastern part of the Dorset Cursus). The cursus earthworks are long gone, only surviving as crop marks, but this extended long barrow survivies, pointing towards the site of the terminal.

Pentridge 2
Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : View of the whole barrow, from the north-west. The nearest end is the tree-covered conventional long barrow. Beyond this is the bank barrow and at the far end a bowl barrow. The little shed on the bank barrow is presumably cover for game birds.

Pentridge 2
Pentridge 2 submitted by JimChampion : View north-east towards the "Pentridge 2" long barrow(s) from the Bokerley Dyke. The long barrow is on the skyline, with its more usual (tree-covered) mound on the right and the long low bank on the left.

As described above, on Environment Agency lidar (grey icon next to CamRA), but with three segments, or 3 perhaps separate monuments that are perfectly aligned
