Round Barrow in West Yorkshire
Found in 2017 preceding housing development, a Bronze Age double-ditched round barrow, Neolithic mortuary enclosure and an Iron Age pit alignment. Destroyed by building.
At the site was found a Neolithic leaf shaped arrow head, a later flint blade and a complete collared urn.
A small square ditched enclosure some 100m from the barrow is being interpreted as a mortuary enclosure and if this interpretation holds it is an important reminder that internment in a barrow was only the final stage in a series of rites and rituals associated with death and burial.
The pit alignment, which dates from the Iron Age, more 1500 years after the creation of the barrow. However it respects the barrow and stops just short of its outer ditch.
We don’t have a lot of barrows in this part of Yorkshire so this was a good find.
The new fast track building regulations may mean that sites like this will be missed.
