Anne T visited on 10th Sep 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Bywell Cross: Considering we live less than a couple of miles from here, and we regularly pop down to walk around here, I've never really stopped to photograph the cross here. Having decided to photograph the medieval cross slabs in St Andrew's church, I got the camera out, only to find another visitor stopped to look at it.
The gentleman told me he'd been doing an annual walk around this area for the last 5(?) years, and was heading off to Ovingham/Ovington next. I decided to come back and photograph the cross after going to St Andrew's, only to find him still there!
This is a very lovely, peaceful spot, with the River Tyne about 50m away. He did eventually wander off after a brief conversation, and I popped into the field to get a photograph of the cross from its eastern side.
Bywell was once a busy and thriving village, dating back to pre-Conquest times, when the lands were owned by a Saxon Earl of Northumberland. Not far from a major Lead Road, by medieval times, the village was well known for its harness and sword making, and also it's 'Black and White' twin churches: St Peter's and St Andrew's, which are located within a couple of hundred metres of each other, near the banks of the River Tyne (the black and white refers to the colour of the habits worn by the monks (Benedictine and Dominicans)).
This market cross used to be located at NZ 04876145, being moved to its current location in 1852. It is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 20618 and Grade II listed as Historic England List ID 1044832.
The cross dates to the 13th century, stands 2.8m tall, and upon a chamfered socket stone which in turn sits upon three steps. The ball which now tops it is thought to date from 1700. The sides of the cross are decorated with now worn nail-head ornament.
