Ring cairn in West Yorkshire

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this site - see their entry for Ringstone Edge, Barkisland, Ripponden, West Yorkshire, which gives directions for finding this site together with and image of the 1854 OS map showing the location of the site, an artists impression, a brief archaeology & history and local folklore.

The ring cairn is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 47540, the summary of which reads: "A ring cairn known as the Ring of Stones located in improved pasture on Ringstone Edge Moor, Barkisland. The ring cairn survives as a low circular stony bank, 28 metres in diameter. The bank is typically 4 metres wide and 0.1 metre high. Scheduled", adding: "Barnatt includes the site, which he names The Wolf Fold, in his gazetteer of stone circles, and suggests that the site could have been an embanked stone circle, despite its present appearance as a damaged ring cairn. He notes that the bank is unusually wide for a ring cairn (c12 metres), and refers to a later, 1775 edition of Watson's book which described the stones as having stood upwards of 3ft above the bank."

This site is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1018559, titled "Ring cairn known as the Ring of Stones on Ringstone Edge Moor, 800m south of Upper Gosling Royd," adding: "The monument includes a ring cairn located in improved pasture on Ringstone Edge Moor, Barkisland. The ring cairn survives as a low circular stony bank, approximately 28m in total diameter. The bank is typically 4m wide and 0.1m high."

Ringstone Edge
Ringstone Edge submitted by TimPrevett : Visited late January 2022, on a dedicated long walk from Slaithwaite. A local bird watcher at the reservoir told me there was nothing to see at the circle; I told him I've visited many places with nothing to see. Accessed low season on a direct approach; soft drinks and alcohol cans left in the circle and nearby, so it's clearly being frequented as a spot to spend a while in. Tidied up a... Ringstone Edge
Ringstone Edge submitted by wayland : Ringstone edge "cairn circle" from WSW showing reservior in background. The walls surrounding the reservior are reputed to have taken a considerable amount of material from the site and when the water is low a number of possible hut circles have been noted on the NW side.

Thanks whiteone, that was a very interesting (and spooky) story. It sounds as if the ancestors are very unhappy at the way their precious site has been treated! Your little girl might be a very clever dowser one day. There's a saying about real truths that starts: "Out of the mouths of babes and (sucklings?)......" This time her mouth was firmly closed! On the other hand, she could have been picking up on your anxiety?

I live near this site and have visited it as an earth energy dowser. I was accompanied by my backpacked 18 month old daughter, we approached the site from the road and she "chatted" away while I noted the unrenovated deralict farm house (rare in this part of the world). The atmosphere at the building was most unpleasant and I was glad to be away.

We walked some way from the house thro the fields but as we came within 50 yds of the circle my daughter suddenly fell silent and very still, I checked of course and there was nothing wrong, so I continued. I dowsed the site and found a line running roughly N/S through the centre of the circle of the most extremely negative nature. I have not experienced such a dire sink in the earth's field as at this place and could not wait to get away. The -ve energy line that passes thro this feature is well known to local dowsers who have mapped the locality, but to visit a node and experience such an apauling place was an experience I would wish not to repeat. As we walked from the site and within 50 yds my daughter once more began to chatter, what do they know about it?

Marked as a cairn circle on the OS maps, this rubble bank is said to have had standing stones that were removed in the 18th century.

The bank was further destroyed on the eastern and northern sides in 1907. Prior to 1905 a cinerary urn is reported to have been found and excavation in 1905 found 5 internments about 20 feet in from the NE edge (charred wood, no bones).

A 12”high urn was found lying on it’s side, SW of the centre of the circle covered by two flanking stones with a flat stone on top. The urn was described as “rough and rude construction, consisting of clay mixed with small pebbles” and it had apparently “become softened”

Not much remains now of what must have once been an impressive site. The location can be seen from some distance as a tussocky patch of ground on an otherwise well grazed hillock.

I visited this site today and discovered that the western edge has very recently been destroyed by cultivation.

Delighted to find the mention of this circle. I remember it well as a child when there were more remains, but remember being told to look at the local walls as there were many remains incorporated in them from the circle. Also remember Meg Dyke amongst other things.
