Castle Naze
Castle Naze submitted by stu : SK054785. Ramparts and ditches very impressive still as is the view. A must see. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hillfort in Derbyshire

Also known as Combs Moss, Castle Naze is situated about two kilometres to the west of Dove Holes (the village famous for the Bull Ring henge) atop a steep gritstone escarpment at 427m (1400ft) above sea level. Overlooking Combs Reservoir and the village of Combs the hillfort is defended naturally on the northern and western sides and by a double rampart to the south. It can be seen from the Dove Holes to Combs road, a single-track road running to the north of the hillfort.

The fort is roughly triangular in shape, occupying approximately 0.9 hectares (2.25 acres). It was surveyed in 1957 by students from a Nottingham University summer school and The Workers’ Educational Association of Buxton, when it was established that the fort had undergone three phases of construction, two of the Iron Age period and one Medieval. Obvious differences in the method of construction confirmed that the two prehistoric phases were not contemporary.

Castle Naze
Castle Naze submitted by astronomer : Site inDerbyshire: As pointed out by H Fenton, Castle Naze hill fort is correctly shown in this view of Combs Edge and Short Edge seen from Eccles Pike to its north west. The defensible hollow-way can be seen climbing the northern side of the hill below the enclosure.

Castle Naze
Castle Naze submitted by h_fenton : Castle Naze is protected on the western side by cliffs of upto 16metres high, most of the cliffs in this photo are 10-12metres. These cliffs/crags have been popular with climbers for about a century or so (although this crag is fairly quiet compared to others in the area)

Castle Naze
Castle Naze submitted by astronomer : This view of Combs Edge looking beyond Combs reservoir was taken from Eccles Pike above Chapel-en-le-Frith in summer 2008. The Iron Age enclosure of Castle Naze is indicated. (2 comments)

Castle Naze
Castle Naze submitted by astronomer : Looking SW from the entrance, the twin ramparts at castle Naze curve downhill towards a precipitous rocky edge.

Castle Naze
Castle Naze submitted by astronomer : This shot shows the hollow way as it ascends the hillside to the Iron Age fortified enclosure. The last stage of the ascent would have been very easily defended from the rocky hillside directly above the track.

Castle Naze
Castle Naze submitted by astronomer : From Cow Low Lane, the 100ft high, very steep ascent to the fortified enclosure presents a difficult prospect. The zig-zag hollow-way approach can be picked out rising from centre R and then doubling back up to the fort on the RH summit edge.

Castle Naze
Castle Naze submitted by astronomer : Looking NE across the entrance gap, the double ramparts form a formidable barrier to intruders. It's thought that the outer (RH) wall is later than the inner rampart and is therefore less eroded.

Castle Naze
Castle Naze submitted by astronomer : From the east, the outer defense ramparts of Castle Naze would have presented a formidable barrier on approach across the moor. The only way in, through the gateway, would have been easily defended.
