Cliffe Castle Museum
Cliffe Castle Museum submitted by Sunny100 : Modern Stone Circle in the 'Garden of Life' in the grounds of Cliffe Castle, near Keighley, west Yorkshire. It is located at the northeastern side, close to Skipton Road, at SE 05889 42266. Beechcliffe House used to stand on this site. (Vote or comment on this photo)
For rock-art afficianados, a couple of well-presented examples have found a home in this West Yorksire museum. There's a very good 'virtual tour' of the nearby Rombald's Moor, showing photographs of many of the cup-and-ring carvings, with their relative positions.

A second stone, the Cliffe Castle Carving, is also held within the museum. See TNA's entry for Cliffe Castle Carving (144), Keighley, West Yorkshire, which contains photographs and a description. More information on this stone, together with photographs and drawings can also be found at England's Rock art - see their entry for Dobrudden (South) 01.

The address for the museum is: Cliffe Castle Museum, Spring Gardens Lane, Keighley, West Yorkshire, BD20 6LH, West Yorkshire, England

As well as rock art, the museum collection includes:-
Archaeology, Weapons and War, Natural Sciences, Costume and Textiles, Decorative and Applied Art, World Cultures, Fine Art, Music, Coins and Medals, Personalities, Archives, Science and Technology, Social History, Land Transport.

June 2017 update by Anne T: Also see The Northern Antiquarian's (TNA) page for the Cliffe Castle Carving, Keighley, West Yorkshire which gives directions on how to find the museum together with photographs and a brief archaeology and history.

Re: Cliffe Castle Museum, Keighley by Anonymous on Wednesday, 28 November 2007
From Mike Short.
I have to confess that I didn't know that the Baildon Moor example was in Cliffe Castle. For interest, a sketch of this stone can be found in the excellent book by Keith J S Boughey and E A Vickerman: 'Yorkshire Archaeology 9, Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding: Cup and Ring marked rocks of the Valleys of the Aire, Wharfe, Washburn and Nidd', pub. West Yorkshire Archaeology Service on behalf of West Yorkshire Joint Service, ISBN 1 870453 32 8.
referred to as stone 144, sketch at Fig 31, Keith Boughey/Vickerman record: "SE136- 398-, Baildon Moor: formerly S Dobrudden Caravan caravan Park. Cup with two rings and five cups with one ring (Paley Baildon (1913) shows six), about 17 more cups, a few grooves all now worn and not easy to make out, but cup along curved lines round one ring and partially round the double ring seem to show a more certain overall design than usual. refs: Baildon 1913 2 fig 2; Jackson 1955c, 38-40 no.2"

Hitherto, I had thought that the 'Heygate Stone' first identified by me in 2003 and now beautifully displayed in the Countryside Centre on Shipley Glen, was the only known example of a rock with Cup-and-two-rings found on baildon Moor. Boughey/Vickerman refer to the Cliffe Castle example as showing 'a more certain overall design than usual'. Although that is a subjective description, I understand what they mean. The 'Heygate Stone', which is probably a fragment of a much larger stone, certainly also fits the category of 'a more certain design than usual. If you go to the Cliffe Castle 8 december event, do also go to the Shipley Glen Countryside Centre to see the magnificent Heygate Stone.
