Anne T visited on 8th Jun 2021 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 2 Access: 4 St Andrew's Well, Ovington: Parking in Ovington village by the old red phone box (now the Village Information Centre), it was a very pleasant walk along St Andrew's Lane to find this well, now no longer shown on the OS maps, but still very much there. We carried on towards Whittle Dene, another glorious location, to find Dean Head Well and Eddybroth Well.

St Andrew's Well (Ovington)
St Andrew's Well (Ovington) submitted by Anne T : Stepping carefully round the hole for the well, with feet either side of what would have been the water channel flowing from the well, the remain of a stone structure can be seen. After a period of rain, water flows into a small channel which leads south. The ground was still muddy and boggy at the time of our visit, after a prolonged dry period. Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Northumberland

Wondering why there was a lane called 'St Andrew' Lane' leaded east-north-east from Ovington towards Whittle Dene, especially is there is only a Methodist chapel in Ovington, and the nearest church is St. Mary's in Ovingham, our curiosity was piqued.

A closer look at the old OS maps revealed that there was a well called 'St Andrew's Well' situated along this lane. Whilst the well is shown on the 1865 6 inch OS map, by 1896, the name of the well has been dropped from the 25 inch OS, and shown as a small unfenced enclosure off the southern side of the lane [maps courtesy of the National Library of Scotland].

A walk along the lane showed that there is still a small, very overgrown path at the site of this small enclosure. Walking a couple of metres through the weeds and nettles, there is a hole which has been fenced off; however, the fence has disintegrated in parts, and it is possible to walk up this hole, which, whilst not deep, was filled with water.

Clearing some of the weeds and rubbish away, it was possible to see some of the stone structure which remains of this well. After a prolonged dry period, the well was dry, although the ground muddy. The line of the small stream which flows southwards from the well could also be made out.

St Andrew's Well (Ovington)
St Andrew's Well (Ovington) submitted by Anne T : Getting closer to the unmarked enclosure shown on the recent OS map, just to the south of St Andrew's Lane, other people must have visited this well, as there is an overgrown path which leads up to a (broken) fenced enclosure. A hole in the shrubbery can be made out from the lane. (Vote or comment on this photo)
