Wall Roman sites (Letocetum) submitted by Forest_Jungle_Collective : The Roman site in the village of Wall (confusing, yes) the remains of a bathouse & mansio at the town of Letocetum @ForestCollectiv on Twitter (Vote or comment on this photo)
A series of Roman military sites, a staging post and small Romano-British town known as Letocetum, at Wall. Letocetum represents the evolution of a site from the early military campaigns to the development of a significant staging post and Romano-British small town.

The mansio and bath house are the most important buildings in the town and are considered to be the best preserved examples surviving in England. Considerable amounts of archaeological information relating to the many aspects of Roman life at Letocetum are known to survive. The monument represents a very well preserved example of its type.

Wall Roman Site Museum Open Weekend, Sat/Sun 9/10th September by Andy B on Wednesday, 06 September 2023
(User Info | Send a Message)
Our fantastic team of volunteers will be opening Wall Roman Site museum on 9th and 10th September.
Wall in Staffordshire was an important staging post on Watling Street, the Roman military road to north Wales. The road network was crucial to the Romans' control over their empire. At staging posts like Wall weary Roman officials, soldiers and imperial messengers could find lodging for the night and change their horses.

At Wall today you can still see the remains of an inn for travellers and the public baths, with its sequence of cold, warm and hot rooms. The museum provides a fascinating insight into life here and displays many excavated finds.

Saturday 9 September: 11:00 - 16:00
Sunday 10 September: 11:00 -16:00
No booking required

Parking: Free parking is available 50m from the entrance to the site. Access: There is no wheelchair access to the Roman site, and one step up into the museum building. Facilities: Toilet facilities are available during museum opening hours.
