Anne T visited on 23rd Jul 2016 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Edlingham Anglo Saxon Cross Bases, Northumberland: We went to visit Edlingham Castle/Fortified Manor House nearby, not expecting to find this charming (but very squat) 11th century church (St John The Baptist). As we approached, I spotted the Anglo Saxon cross bases by the south porch, although nothing is said about these in the church guide. According to the Northumberland HER record, there is also supposed to be the remains of an 8th century cross shaft in the north east corner of the nave, although we didn't spot this during our visit (but is recorded on the AS Corpus).
The location of this church is charming. Within a couple of hundred yards there is the ruined castle, with a wonderful example of a trilobe joggled lintel above the fireplace in the Solar Tower. Beyond is a viaduct from the now dismantled railway. Within easy walking distance is the cup and ring/rune marked rock at Lemmington Wood and the rock shelter at Corby Crags.
Following our visit to the church and castle, we walked to Noah's Well at the eastern end of the village, just outside Demesne.

Two eighth century Anglo Saxon cross base stones sit at the south west end of the porch to this 11th century church. Recorded as HER 4222 in the Northumberland Historic Environment Record, the larger stone "measures 0.5m square at the base, 0.4m square at the top and is 0.5m high". The smaller stone is 0.5m square and 0.3m high. Neither of the stones have obvious decoration.
According to this HER record there is also a small fragment of a pre-Conquest cross shaft, decorated with an interlacing foliage design. This is sited in the north east corner of the nave of the church, although we didn't find this at the time of our visit.
For those interested in church architecture, there is a very interesting barrel-vaulted south porch with round arch entrance; the threshold is formed of a 14th century grave marker which has been cut to size. The chancel arch also dates from the late 11th century.
Within a few hundred yards is the ruins of Edlingham Castle/fortified manor house with its solar tower. Also within easy walking reach is the Lemmington Wood rock art/rune stone.
