Blackwell
Blackwell submitted by astronomer : The line of the Blackwell stones parallels a ridge in the field. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This site sits in a field 0.4km NE of the A6 Buxton-Bakewell road on the west side of the B6049. Superficially it looks like a chambered tomb, similar to that at Five Wells 0.9km to its south but in a robbed out and dilapidated condition.

The easternmost stone is set at right angles to the line of the others.

This site is not shown on the White Peak Area 1:25000 O.S. map (O.S. Outdoor Leisure 24)

Blackwell Cross
Blackwell Cross submitted by ocifant : The sign on the wall reads: "This Saxon cross is sculptured with spiral knots and Stafford-knots, interwoven with extra cords and bands. Similar crosses are to be found at Eyam, Taddington and Norbury. One authority dates the cross about 650ad." (5 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Blackwell
Blackwell submitted by astronomer : From the nearby road, looking NW, the Blackwell site looks like the remains of a chambered tomb. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Blackwell
Blackwell submitted by astronomer : End on, from the east, the Blackwell stones are terminated by this stone set at a right-angle to the others. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Glad someone has shed light on this. Couldn't understand why it wasn't on maps. Of course one is always a bit sus when no English Heritage info boards are around...still I have photoed it a few times at different seasons and times of day.

Anyway know about the new stone circle on a farm in Northallerton district?

Anyone have any info on the henge the Bullring and barrow near Buxton?

Please don't be fooled by the appearance of this. This is a modern construction, built by the farmer only a few years ago !!!

My understanding from speaking to people living in or around Blackwell is that this is a MODERN construction produced by the farmer from assorted stones found around his fields...
