Whitsbury
Whitsbury submitted by JimChampion : May 2005. Looking east across the dry valley at Whitsbury hillfort - its ramparts are hidden beneath the dense tree cover. The defences on the hill were first constructed in the early Iron Age, and were reinforced in medieval times. The grassy bank running up the centre of the photo is a medieval boundary earthwork. A Bronze Age boundary earthwork (Grim's Ditch) runs underneatht the hillfort but l... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hillfort in Hampshire

A pear-shaped hillfort on a chalk outcrop, defended by three ramparts and two ditches, with its original entrance at the southwestern corner destroyed by the construction of a post-medieval manor house. The site has been in use throughout the ages, with excavation revealing mesolithic activity, an association with a Bronze Age ranch boundary, an Iron Age hillfort settlement, followed much later by Anglo-Saxon rennovation and reuse of the defences. [source]

Access The interior of the hillfort is privately owned and currently contains a stables. Continuing with the horsey theme, it is surrounded on three sides by public bridleways which allow close-up views of the tree-covered defences.

Whitsbury Down
Whitsbury Down submitted by JimChampion : Actually, according to the OS map, the byway runs parallel to this track along the other side of the fence. There is indeed a small gate in the fence - not wide enough for a vehicle - providing access to a mown strip. I sensibly stayed on the track. This high hedge prevents any good view of the long barrow which is on the left of this track a bit further on. (c) Peter Facey and licensed for r... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Whitsbury Down
Whitsbury Down submitted by JimChampion : The barrow is separated from a byway by a high hedge and this is all I could see leaning over the fence. The view is along the back of the barrow. To get a better view one would need to revisit when the crop has been harvested.
