TheCaptain couldn't find on 22nd Nov 2004 To the south of Moitiers d'Allonne is the community of La Haye D’Ectot, which supposedly has its own Allée Couverte, which is often confused with the above. Not marked on any maps I have, I called in at the village admin centre, at this time of day now closed. Outside this was the community map and footpath guide with places of interest marked on it, but I could find no reference to any megalithic monument.

To the south of Moitiers d'Allonne is the community of La Haye D’Ectot in Manche, which supposedly has its own Allée Couverte, which is often confused with the Autel des Druides des Moitiers d'Allonne.

Recorded in 1833 "Annuaire du Département de la Manche, Volume 5", as being the smallest and most ruinous of the seven "galeries couverte" monuments known in La Manche departement. It was to be found in the middle of a south sloping field, several hundred metres from the Barneville to Briquebec road, and near to an ancient spring, La Fontaine de la Taille. Oriented east to west, 35 feet long and three feet wide with 5 cover slabs, the western end was closed by a large slab.

Not marked on any maps I have, I called in at the village admin centre, at that time of day closed. Outside this was the community map and footpath guide with places of interest marked on it, but I could find no reference to any megalithic monument.

Hi
My wife and I have just relocated to Barneville-Carteret in Normandy and I found your site as I was keen to see what there was here in terms of megalithic structures.

I have tried to find the allee couverte at La Haye d'Ectot but could not using the location on the map on your site which is just off the D130. I looked around the area for a whole morning. Unfortunately the Mairie is closed until January. However I did bump into a man out hunting who directed me to what he believed was the correct site in a different valley further north over the other side of the valley and closer to the spring at La Taille.. He said it was a large rock balanced on three smaller rocks.

I headed up in that direction and just happened to bump into the land owner who knew what I was talking about and said that there was indeed an allee couverte on his land where I have put the most northerly circle. He described it like the hunter did ie one large rock balanced on three smaller rocks. He said he had found it a few years back when an english lady came looking for the same thing.

I searched the area I was directed to and came across a linear feature at that location that to my untrained eyes appeared to be a large and regular field boundary marked on the map. There were some large rocks at one point that could be taken for an allee couverte but no large rock on three smaller ones that I could see. It seems to me just to be a long wall albeit with very large blocks. The large blocks looked fresh and not weathered at all. My search was hampered by the state of the area being completely overgrown. I will send photos later.

So just where the allee couverte is I can not completely say. It would be interesting to compare the original location information you have with the OS map to see if they correspond in anyway. If it is indeed where the map on your site says it is well then I have to say it has probably been robbed out - my wife who is French says she woudn't be at all surprised! (Ed's note. Note portal accuracy rating of 2, ie to nearest village).

I would be surprised but delighted if what I was shown is the correct location. If you wish I can send you photos/videos of what I found and the location on the French OS (presumably ign - ed) map I have. Interestingly the French OS map has the location of the other allee coverte in the area on your site in the same place as you have it but does not show the allee couverte at La Haye d'Ectot at all. A mystery so far :0/

Kindest Regards

    Thanks Carl.

On the Portal's sitepage for La Haye D'Ectot I included a link to a "dance studio" webpage which used to have pictures including the Allee Couverte, but which are no longer there (although it is still mentioned). In the past I spent some time looking for this, and narrowing it down, but never actually finding it. Maybe Carl now has better information, but from memory (very full and fading) the picture does not look like what I remember seeing on the website.

Please bear in mind that the position data on our sitepage is a rating 2, (to nearest village and I believe placed near the Marie), so you will find nothing at that position.

I assume when you talk of the OS map (do they do maps of France?) you mean the local ign map, versions of which are available on the ign geoportail site, linked to directly from our sitepage icons near the top.

Maybe I need to have another look myself next time I am out that way with an afternoon to spare.

Saturday 5th June 2010.
I found the lane to La Taille and the spring OK, and had a look around some of the nearby fields, but found nothing. It wouldn’t surprise me if there was something still to be found, but there are about 38 fields which would fit the description. I think that it would need a lot of time to check all of these fields and hedges here, as there are a great many little fields all surrounded with Normandy Hedges. This is obviously one which needs some local knowledge.

spending some time searching the web, I now believe that the remains of this allée couverte can be seen somewhere within the grounds of the La Taille arts and Dance complex
