Northernchief visited on 19th Feb 2024 - their rating: Cond: 3 Access: 5 The cross base is an impressive “lump”, carved on three sides, but looking very vulnerable to toppling or movement as it is severely undermined , and seems to rest on old bricks wedged beneath (see photos). The nearby stone set in the wall is even more enigmatic. What evidence is there of the supposed Roman road mentioned in the article?

Anglo Saxon Cross Base within the churchyard of St Matthew's, Rastrick.

This cross base is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1314049 and recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 49337. Pastscape dates this base to the 10th or 11th century, adding: "(it is a) solid large stone block with 4 tapering sides and indented head for cross shaft (now gone). Each of the 4 faces have moulded edges and carving in relief with foliated vine scroll to 2 sides, one side blind. That fronting street is divided into 2 panels of interlace of geometric character. A rare survival, possibly in its original position when it would have been used as a preaching cross. Of similar character to Walton cross, Hartshead, Spenborough, Kirklees District".

The Journal of Antiquities also features a page for this cross base - see their entry for St Matthew’s Churchyard Cross, Rastrick, West Yorkshire, which includes directions for finding this cross base, a drawing of the cross base from 1893, and a description. The Journal adds: "It seems that the cross-base stands in it’s original position on or near to a Roman road that traversed the village – the cross would have no doubt marked what was originally an ecclesiastical boundary, or perhaps it was a graveyard marker for a Saxon cemetery."

Maybe best to do a new site page altogether. Submit a new site. Or, just put your photos on with this page and add your comment/information. Whichever you think best.

Is this the one you mean Sunny?

View Larger Map http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-338822-stone-built-into-west-face-of-wall-to-nu Listing Text BRIGHOUSE CROWTREES LANE SE 12 SW (east side) 3/79 Stone built into west face of wall to No. 15 II Much weathered gritstone monolith, probably C10, built in to hammer-dressed stone wall, bearing spiral motif incised into the stone. This extends down the left hand side before running out to the left. This is reminiscent of a Bishop's crozier and may mark an earlier ecclesiastical boundary. It is of similar character to the cross-base in St. Matthew's Churchyard (q.v.) some 200m to the north and may be contemporary with it. This would place it in the C10. Further up Crowtrees Lane in the garden wall of no 15 is an ancient stone with a spiral carved upon it. Have a look on the Google Street view.
