Anne T visited on 19th Feb 2017 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Scots Dyke (Easby): Having purchased our map (one of the few we don’t already possess), we headed off eastwards from Richmond, down the minor road passing through Anchorage Hill towards Brompton-on-Swale. Just past St. Nicholas, there is a right hand turn towards Easby. Turning down this road, there is a layby within 20 metres of the junction. With a lovely view south to the River Swale and Easby Abbey, our first sight of the dyke was within a few metres west of this layby – an earthwork bounded by relatively young trees. Having photographed this small section as best I could (the gate was padlocked), I clambered round a tree, avoiding the deep rabbit holes.

There is a second section of the dike across the road, which Pastscape tells us runs for 360 metres south of the Darlington Road to Sandford House (monument 1034723), east of Whitefields Farm. From the layby on the lane leading down to Easby, on the opposite side of the road, a footpath leads to the left of Sandford House, and runs over the top of the dyke for some way. Heading northwards, the bank with its ditch to the east, there is a new build housing site to the west. Not a great ambience. We wondered how many of the new residents would know they were living next to an ancient monument.

Scots Dyke (Easby)
Scots Dyke (Easby) submitted by Anne T : This small section of Scots Dyke, south of Sandford House, can be seen as a bank about 2 metres tall, flanked by trees. This photo was taken from the layby next to it, where there were lovely views down to Easby Abbey and the River Swale. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Misc. Earthwork in Yorkshire (North)

Historic England tells us that Scots Dyke is "a linear earthwork extending for 14 km from the River Tees to south of the River Swale in north Yorkshire. Significant sections remain visible as upstanding earthworks and indicate that the dyke system had an earthen rampart flanked on the eastern side by a ditch. Where it does not survive as an upstanding monument, the dyke is visible as a crop mark on aerial photographs and elsewhere often survives as a low bank beneath present field boundaries. It was constructed in the post-Roman period and encloses an area in the eastern foothills of the Pennines between the two rivers."

Pastscape tells us that the dyke was originally thought to be a 6th or 7th century territorial boundary; however in 2006, excavations revealed it to date from the early to mid-Iron Age.

Several sections of the dyke remain clearly visible, in a number of different sections. For full details, see Pastscape's entry for Scots Dyke (related monuments).

This section, cut by a road, lies to the south east of Richmond, on the way to Easby. From Richmond follow the minor road to Brompton-on-Swale, taking the first minor road to the right signposted to Easby. Within 20 metres of this road junction is a layby. The first section of Scots Dike lies immediately next to this layby, appearing as a clear bank some 2 metres high, bordered by trees.

Over the road, to the left of Sandford House, take the footpath leading northwards. After 200 metres, the footpath runs along the top of the dyke, with its ditch to your right hand side. Pastscape tells us this section runs for about 360 metres, from Sandford House to the Darlington Road.

Note that the spelling on the OS Map is Scots Dike, whereas on Pastscape and Historic England, the monument is referred to as Scots Dyke.

Scots Dyke (Easby)
Scots Dyke (Easby) submitted by Anne T : Across the road from the first section of earthwork, there is a footpath running to the west of Sandford House. Following this footpath, after about 200 metres, the path runs along the top of the dyke, with its ditch to the eastern side. With a new housing estate being built immediately to the west, it's not a very enigmatic place to be! (Vote or comment on this photo)
