Northernchief visited on 17th Sep 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Access: 4 It deserves better… must have been massive when complete, and I think there is a base structure. Also, what were the holes for?

Ancient Cross in Yorkshire (West)

The base of a 10th Century Cross on the roadside and edge of the moor.

This scheduled ancient monument is recorded as Historic England List ID 1012873 (Anglian high cross fragment known as Walton Cross) and Pastscape Monument No. 49290, which tells us this cross base is in situ, and has a massive gritstone base. The HE entry says "Part of the missing component is purported to have been found in a nearby field in the early 1980s", and includes a detailed description of the socle or socket stone.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for The Walton Cross, Hartshead, West Yorkshire, which includes directions for finding this cross, together with a description, quotations from publications, plus a list of reference sources for more information.
