Askwith Moor (509)
Askwith Moor (509) submitted by attlebax : West Lane, Askwith. Just over the fence. Correctly described in previous text. Location also correct. Looks like several stones have been dragged to the side of the field. All around a metre across. I decided that the barbed wire fence was a good reason not to get closer. You can actually just catch a glimpse of the stones on Google Earth. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Rock Art in Yorkshire (North)

Askwith Moor is one of a number of moors in the area that have rock-art and ancient settlements. There are about 30 carvings on this moor alone including the 'Manstone' and 'Womanstone'. This rock art stone is recorded as Boughey & Vickerman 509, which says this is "one of several rock in the eastern corner of field immediately north of West Lane - waste from field clearance."

B&V describe the stone as being "medium sized, fairly smooth, flat-topped grit rock. Two adjacent faces carved, perhaps as one design: (now) vertical face has a large cup and two cups joined by groove, present top has a large cup and short groove, all above enclosed in two halves of long S-type groove."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this carved stone - see their entry for West Lane Rock, Askwith, North Yorkshire, although TNA give a grid reference of SE 15802 48393, which is 100 metres east from the grid reference given above. The TNA page gives directions for finding this stone, together with a photograph, description and comments on the area around this stone - as a century back, only 100 yards away, are the remains of what was an old quarry that used industrial machinery similar to the ones that have made the recent curved markings on the stones a mile up the valley. And as we can see quite clearly with this stone and its companions, they’ve been moved and dumped into their present position at the field-side."

Please note that the NGRs given by TNA and the Portal page are 100 metres apart. The B&V records confirm the grid reference given above is correct. Will let TNA know - this might be another stone, although the descriptions with B&V are the same.
