St Oswald (East Hauxwell)
St Oswald (East Hauxwell) submitted by hadrian : Cross with small inscribed stone at the base 'CRUX SANCTI JACOBI AD630' (Vote or comment on this photo)
Eighth Century Cross Shaft in St Oswald's Churchyard, East Hauxwell.

St Oswald's Church, East Hauxley, dates largely from the 11th and 13th centuries and "the C11th nave and chancel probably form the oldest church in Richmondshire" according to the church's Welcome Leaflet.
There are two Anglo-Danish crosses to be found here. One sits in the churchyard about 20 yards south of the south porch, near a neatly trimmed yew tree. This dates from the 9th century (although the church guide says late 10th to 11th century) and shows latticework on both sides of the cross shaft. The cross head has been heavily mutilated, although it still possible to make out some decoration.
The second Anglo-Danish cross, also dating from the 9th century, can be found re-used as a lintel in a blocked up door-way in the north wall of the church. For those interested in church architecture, there is some unusual herringbone masonry to be found in both the north and south walls and there are original Norman arches over the south entrance door and between the nave and chancel.

St Oswald (East Hauxwell)
St Oswald (East Hauxwell) submitted by Anne T : This shaped block of stone lies some 10 yards south of the south porch, in between the porch and the Anglo-Danish cross. It was not aligned with the grave markers in the churchyard and I haven't (yet) been able to find any reference to what it might be in any reference material. Curious. St Oswald (East Hauxwell)
St Oswald (East Hauxwell) submitted by Anne T : The 9th century Anglo-Danish cross with lattice-work, about 20 yards south of the south porch of St. Oswalds (note the guide book says this cross is late 10th/early 11th century, although other sources agree with the 9th century date). Herringbone stonework is quiet common with Anglo-Saxon construction

There is yet another fragment of an Anglo Saxon cross which can be seen, with difficulty, at ground level behind the second large gravestone to the right of the main entrance (when facing the entrance).

Ancient cross in the Church graveyard.
Very short walk (50 meters) from the church entrance, . Cross is immediatley opposite the church entrance door .
The cross has no arms leaving the pillar and an inscribed stone at the base reading "CRUX SANCTI JACOBI AD630" or similar.
I have decent photo's.
