Ancient Village or Settlement in Tyne and Wear

Tyne and Wear HER 5097. Text adapted and clarified from the HER.

In 1995 an earthwork on the wooded scarp of the River Derwent near Winlaton Mill was reported by Mr. Bill Farrell as a probable Roman Fort. David Cranstone visited the site in May 1998. The site has not been excavated.

The most prominent feature is a bank in the east end of the wood, almost parallel to the Derwent scarp. This appears to return northwest at its north end, but is damaged here by former agriculture as it passes into a paddock at the end of the wood, and is then cut off by the former railway. The narrow strip between the bank and scarp edge is occupied by two corrugations parallel to the bank. To the south the bank breaks down into a terrace with a downslope to the south-east. From the southern point, two or three corrugations run to the north-west inside the edge of the wood forming a possible return.
The site would have controlled the lowest ford on the River Derwent, and an important fishery.

it's name is the bark wood or barky to locals, the large stone house in the old village was called bark wood house, the last family to live there were the tailors.it got the name coopers wood because it's present owner is mr.John Cooper. It has a right of way through but the rest oh the wood is private including the part on your photo is .C.C.H.
