Barrow Elm
Barrow Elm submitted by 4clydesdale7 : From the W. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A Saxon Oval Barrow with an axis SE/NW measuring 19m x 15m about 1.75m high reduced minimally by a field wall and covered in trees and shrubs. It can be visited easily as it stands on the N of the junction of the Hatherop to Fairford Road with the Salt Way.

It has always been considered to be the meeting place of the Brightwells Barrow Hundred. Rudder referred to it as Aston Barrow in his History of Gloucestershire in 1779. Although Witts (1883) and Darvill (BGAS 1989) were silent about this barrow references to it can also be found in The Victorian County History of Gloucestershire (1981 Reprint) Vol. 7 p87 and as ever BGAS 1884-5 Vol 9 p333; 1930 Vol 52 p275-6 and 1960 Vol 79 p117
