poho visited on 29th Jan 2023 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 2 A climb up a very steep hill to the top is rewarded with suberb views, and the atmosphere was very spooky. Maybe I should have paid less attention to the stories of ghosts, murders and the devil that I read before setting off on this walk! Note that there is no official public access so go lightly and leave only footprints.

Meon Hill
Meon Hill submitted by geraldaf : Its the 18th December 2002. A top Meon Hill, where the coming night will be spent. The patterns of yeah old plough so clean, crisp, a moment in the earths roll towards sunset, the makers of this image, thousands apon thousands of sunsets gone. Not a breath of wind. But cold, the three past nights stars radiant. Such quite.

Visited north & west sides amazing views, steep sides and ramparts (Jarrett's Brow) which is stunning in the sunshine. Sheep and lambs on the west side. Walked up after taking a detour from the Monarchs footpath though did have to climb over a wooden fence - there are some fences with barbed wire. The top is very flat, fenced off and sown with winter wheat. You can see where others have walked and we met a woman from the village walking her dog up there too.

Very nice. This winter solstice sunset in the gap of the hills would have been closer to last gleam the farther back in time one goes. Has the site had much excavation. I wonder if there are any indications of Neolithic remains within the area of the later hillfort.

I lived in Stratford during the War. There was an Army Camp at Long Marston where my father was stationed.
I often climbed to the top of Meon Hill. I was told that history stated it was once used by the Romans as a fort and I remember the grass was a different shade of green in parts presumably because there were stone walls underneath. It was a lovely spot and the view very beautiful. I also remember it was FLAT on the top. Man-made?

There does seem to be some sort of access at SP 17062 45531
We walked by it today and there was a permissive path sign. However we did not go up it. I have tried to find info on the internet without success.

Can anyone tell me the origin of the name 'Jarrett's brow', which appears on maps of Meon Hill?

Jarrett is my mother's maiden name. Some of the Jarrett family lived in Mickleton in the 19th Century. Perhaps they once had a farm building of some kind here. I have walked on Jarrett's Brow by kind permission of a local farmer and thought there were some signs of it having once been used in this way. Would dearly like to know more of course!

Has remains of three banks on south side. Each probably no more than a meter tall with a south facing gate. Ramprts are larger to East. On the West and North defences suplied by the steepness of the hill which have probably been steepened.
