TakNe visited on 15th Mar 2022 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Viewing this page and comments on this site I became convinced that previous visitors were looking in the wrong place. I followed the exact co-ordinates using Google Maps and found the burial mound easily. This was in mid March 2022. Perhaps later in the year forest growth could make this site hard to find. But the circular mound was quite obvious from an informal path leading from the road. The burial mound appears smaller than some descriptions but has retained its shape well. There is a small pit on the very top. This could be from a fallen tree or perhaps someone digging. Possibly from the 1763 excavation that exposed the stone coffin and pot but I imagine this would have naturally filled in or eroded away by now. More likely this is a relatively modern feature.

Anne T couldn't find on 23rd Apr 2017 - their rating: Amb: 2 Access: 5 Axwell Park Tumulus, Gateshead: OK, even with the grid reference, we couldn't find any trace of this - not surprising, since checking the Pastscape records this morning (24th April), they say no trace of the mound exists! There were lots and lots of humps and hollows on the slope to the left of the path as you walk up the hill. The area seems to be part of an estate and has been heavily modified, with an artificial waterfall and stone-lined channels for water visible in the undergrowth. This area today is on the edge of a modern housing estate, which is still being constructed. The only thing I can say about this is that it is an easy walk up through the park on tarmacked road.

Possible Barrow, tree covered mound.

The text from the Tyne and Wear HER follows, slightly edited and updated.

HER 504
NZ19196188
In 1952 the Ordnance Survey recorded a mound in Axwell Park, and gave its dimensions as 9.30 m diameter east-west, 8.70 m north-south, and 0.80 m high. It has been suggested as a possible prehistoric burial mound, and it is interesting to note that what was almost certainly a prehistoric burial with pot (HER 505) was found in Axwell Park in 1763. It was not visible when the site was visited in the mid-1970s. (The area was then thickly covered in rhododendrons- JLD).

HER 505
On March 11th 1763 workmen discovered an urn with a little dust in it inside a large stone coffin, in which was a skull with the teeth very fresh, and several large bones. It is not known in what part of the grounds the coffin was found, and it is uncertain what became of it. It is assumed that this was probably a prehistoric burial, probably dating to the Bronze Age. See HER no. 504, a possible barrow in the Park.

Update April 2017: See Pastscape Monument No 22938, which says that the area in which the mound was last seen has now been heavily quarried over the last 20 years; it may have been removed or covered by dense undergrowth.

Axwell Park Barrow
Axwell Park Barrow submitted by Anne T : Couldn't find this tumulus, even with the grid reference. There were so many humps, hollows and bumps in the landscape, now on the edge of a modern housing estate. Researching the site further this morning, found out 'no traces exist'. Still, it was interesting to go to this park, as we've never ventured here before.

I suspect that some or the previous comments on this site may be mistaken. The image by DurhamNature appears to be a different site. The second image was taken in the right place but looking in the wrong direction. I visited this sight today and using Google Maps went to the exact co-ordinates where I found a small circular mound with what looked like an exploratory pit in the middle of it.
I took some photos from all angles and a short walk around video which I'll upload above.

Some of the pottery is illustrated in Roger Miket's "The Prehistory of Tyne and Wear"
