Misc. Earthwork in Wiltshire

A few miles east of Swindon lies the village of Bishopstone. Beyond the village, on the downs you'll find a giant staircase sculptured into the landscape.
These steps are 'Strip Lynchets', part of an ancient field system. Medieval farmers cultivated these terraces to protect their crop from the wind whilst capturing the sun from the east and south. Today they remain intact with the apperance of a natural phenomenon.
We visited on a cold December day. The winter sun cast hues of light and shadow across the majestic stages, emphasizing their depth and shape. Dotted around were sheep grazing on the green terraces. Unfortunately my camera battery run out. The few photos I have, don't do it justice.
It's easy to find. In Bishopstone, park opposite the pond. Walk through 'The City' (a group of cottages with a stream running through it) up to Nell Hill. It is well sign posted as part of the Ridgway's circular route. A beautiful tree arched track brings you to a field where you can't miss the lynchets.
