Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Yorkshire (North)

When Edna Whelan searched for this spring in 1986, she could only find a "boggy mess". She tied a cotton scrap to a birch tree near the pool hoping the guardian spirit would be encouraged to return.
It is recorded on the Yorkshire Holy Wells website (1999)
In 2005, volunteers and Sawley Parish Council turned the area around the well into Picking Gill Nature Reserve. The well now has a boardwalk to view it from!
The Wine Wife Well is a natural spring that never runs dry. Local farmers used it when their own supplies ran dry. The stone trough is surrounded by ferns and hart's tongue.
Picking Nature Reserve is just off the B6265 Ripon to Pateley Bridge road. The well is easy to walk to and there is space for a couple of parked cars near to the footpath to the well. Also a nice place for a picnic.
Near by is Fountains Abbey and Aldfield which was well-known for it's Sulphur Springs in the C 18th.
