All Saints (Brailsford)
All Saints (Brailsford) submitted by astronomer : The warrior carved on the Brailsford cross bears a striking resemblence to that thought to be 9th C king Aetheldred on the Repton Stone, discovered in 1979 at Repton, the ancient capital of Mercia, less than 20km away. Ancient Cross in Derbyshire

The Brailsford Mercian cross is the only one to depict personalised carvings in addition to scrollwork and a key pattern. Like the other Mercian crosses, it is thought to date to the 9-10th century.

This is a churchyard I could lose some serious time in. At this time of year, bluebells. The cross shaft. A yew tree in excess of 1,000 years - easily accessible to perch in for a while. A coffin path to Ednaston. A very gnarled cross sculpture of age rocks thick with moss. The location is full of vibes, and sense of place. The church is midway between Ednaston and Brailsford, as it serves those communities now, as it has done for centuries. A mounting block, with nearby stable for the vicar arriving on horseback, in 1754. A very nice spot indeed.
