Hillfort in Hampshire

Most important hillfort of the New Forest, commanding route which is now A31 (Winchester-Poole Harbour between river-crossings at Romsey and Ringwood) near Lyndhurst. Large double-ditched hillfort, rings mostly intact and rising up to 3 or 4 metres on SE and N sides. Surrounded by mature woodland, and a lovely circuit walk from one of a few lay-bys on lane from Minstead to the A31. Central circle inside inner ring is Private land - a flattened lawn around a large Victorian villa "Malwood Castle" and more recent breeze-block garage, but this is screened from view by Victorian rhodedendrons.
